Soft Distance is a group exhibition at X Contemporary Art featuring eight artists. It explores the changing relationships between body and world, reality and imagination, and memory and the present. Distance is understood as an elastic, fluid relationship, continually shaped by everyday movements of approach and departure.
Developed the exhibition’s visual identity and graphic applications, translating the curatorial text into a visual language spanning promotional materials and the exhibition space.
Taking the fluidity of distance as a starting point, the design explores how spaces and connections between letters can express distance beyond fixed spatial measurements.
Connecting individual letters into a continuous path allows the exhibition title to move between readable text and flowing graphic form, making the space between letterforms part of the design.
Redrew the letterforms of “Soft Distance”, adjusting their structures, spacing and connections to create a cohesive whole. The Chinese title follows the same approach, with connections between strokes and characters establishing a shared visual language.
Fine dashed outlines give the letterforms a sense of lightness while suggesting uncertain boundaries and shifting distances. The Chinese and English titles overlap and weave through the composition, allowing the exhibition name to function as both a recognisable mark and the key visual.
This continuous path also guides the wider system. The lettering adapts to each format and proportion, running through the composition while retaining its distinctive character.
The identity extends across exhibition walls, posters, lightboxes, pull-up banners, invitations, exhibition booklet covers, lift graphics, large wall posters and individual artist posters.
From promotional graphics to the exhibition space, the continuous typographic path connects applications at different scales, giving Soft Distance a consistent yet flexible presence throughout the exhibition.
